Collect of the Day

Bishop The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Bishop Let us pray.

Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson                                                             1 Kings 19:4-8

Elijah went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.” He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.

Psalm 34:1-8

Benedicam Dominum

1 I will bless the Lord at all times; *
his praise shall ever be in my mouth.

2 I will glory in the Lord; *
let the humble hear and rejoice.

3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; *
let us exalt his Name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me *
and delivered me out of all my terror.

5 Look upon him and be radiant, *
and let not your faces be ashamed.

6 I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me *
and saved me from all my troubles.

7 The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, *
and he will deliver them.

8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; *
happy are they who trust in him!

The Epistle                                                                  Ephesians 4:25-5:2

Putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

The Gospel Hymn     Good Soil

The Gospel                                                                           John 6:35, 41-51

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Prayer of the People

WE PRAY FOR THE WORLD & THE CHURCH

Intercessor  Grateful for the gifts we have already been given, we now bring our
hopes and needs into the presence of our provident God, saying:
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for our church. As Christians, may we all hunger for the bread of life that we may be transformed into the body of Christ.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for bishops, all the clergy, deacons, and all who minister in the church, especially Michael our Presiding Bishop, Sean our Presiding Bishop-elect and Craig our bishop. May they break the bread of life and proclaim the living word for our world; may we all open our lives to receive the gifts they offer,
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for our Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters. Like the Israelites
in the desert, may they be nourished as they journey in faith through life; May we accompany them in a spirit of repentance and compassion.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for government leaders. May they work for social justice rather than Power; may we support them in their efforts.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who are hungry in our world. May they have their needs satisfied; may we sacrifice some of what we have to feed the poor.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

[Here other intercessions may be offered.]

We pray for those who have recently died [especially N.]. May they share in the heavenly banquet; may we long to be guests with them at God’s holy table.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

All generous God, hear these prayers made in faith and hope. Bring us all one day to sit with you at the banquet you have prepared for those who love you. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus who reigns with you in the power of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
Amen.

Confession of Sin                                                                BCP 360

Bishop        Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Bishop:       Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.  Amen.

The Peace

Bishop        The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People         And also with you!!!

Offertory Hymn 383

Presentation Hymn

We give thee but thine own,

whate’er the gift may be;

all that we have is thine alone,

a trust, O Lord, from thee.

The Great Thanksgiving:  Eucharistic Prayer C

Bishop        The Lord be with you.

People         And also with you.

Bishop        Lift up your hearts.

People         We lift them to the Lord.

Bishop        Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People         It is right to give God thanks and praise.

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise

Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be; the vast expanse of the interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.

By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.

Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law.  And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill you Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

By his blood he reconciled us.

By his wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

Bishop and People

S-125

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts.  Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; gave thanks, and said “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.  Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,

We celebrate his death and resurrection,
as we await the day of his coming.

Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us.  Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal.  Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name.

Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father in heaven,

  hallowed be your Name,

  your kingdom come,

  your will be done,

    on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

  as we forgive those

  who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial,

  and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

  and the glory are yours,

  now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Bishop:        Alleluia.  Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People:       Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Post Communion Prayer (Stand)                                                     BCP 366

Celebrant and People:

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
